Main Street Railroad
Main Street Railroad Live Cam Live Cam

Few places let you watch freight trains run straight down the centre of a working main street, but La Grange, Kentucky does exactly that. This camera looks out over Main Street from Blooms Boutique, framing the CSX tracks that split the storefronts. Parked cars sit a few feet from the rail, and shopfront awnings line both sides of the street.

Why La Grange? The line here is the old Louisville and Nashville Short Line, now CSX's LCL Subdivision, and it has run through the middle of town since long before the shops arrived. Around ten or more freights pass on a typical day, so the wait is rarely long. It is street running at its most photogenic, with the town carrying on either side.

Main Street Railroad highlights: As you enjoy the live view, be sure to look out for:

  • Street Running Freights: CSX intermodal, manifest and coal trains squeeze between parked cars and storefronts, often the single most striking thing you will see all day.
  • Horns At Crew Discretion: La Grange is a quiet zone, so some crews pass almost silently while others still give a greeting blast as they roll through town.
  • Everyday Main Street Life: Between trains, watch shoppers, delivery vans and local traffic going about their business just feet from the active rails.

Beyond the Tracks: La Grange sits in Oldham County, northeast of Louisville, and its compact downtown is built around the railroad with small shops, cafes and a railroad museum close to the line. The surrounding countryside is classic rolling Kentucky horse and farm land, with the Ohio River valley a short drive north.

This view comes from Virtual Railfan, working with Blooms Boutique on Main Street, whose cameras have made La Grange one of the best known railfanning spots anywhere online. Their steady, well framed streams let viewers around the world share a trackside seat for free.

Settle in with the La Grange stream and wait for that first headlight to appear down Main Street, because the next train is usually closer than you think.
