This camera looks out over Ryde Esplanade and the long timber pier that carries trains and traffic out across Ryde Sands to deep water. Beyond it lies the Solent, one of the busiest stretches of water in Britain, with Portsmouth and Southsea forming the skyline on the far shore. It is a working seafront view that changes with every tide.

Why Ryde? Ryde is the Isle of Wight's main gateway, and almost everything arriving from the mainland passes through this frame. Trains rattle out along the pier to meet the catamaran at Pier Head, hovercraft cross to Southsea, and when the tide retreats the sands stretch out for what feels like forever. Few seafronts pack so much movement into one view.

Ryde Esplanade and Pier highlights: As you enjoy the live view, be sure to look out for:

• Trains On The Pier: Island Line trains run the length of Ryde Pier between Esplanade and Pier Head, a rare sight of rail track built out over open water.
• The Tide Turning: Ryde Sands empty out dramatically at low water, then fill again, completely changing the character of the beach within hours.
• Solent Traffic: Watch ferries, hovercraft, yachts, container ships and naval vessels crossing between the Island and Portsmouth throughout the day.

Beyond the Esplanade: Behind the seafront, Ryde climbs uphill through Victorian streets of shops, cafes and guesthouses. The Esplanade itself is lined with gardens, an ice rink and the long sweep of sand that draws crowds in summer. From here the rest of the Isle of Wight is easily reached by bus or train.
