Porthcawl Lifeboat Station Pier

This camera looks out from the RNLI lifeboat station at Porthcawl, across the harbour breakwater and out into the Bristol Channel. It is one of the more atmospheric views on the South Wales coast, where a short stone pier and its small lighthouse take the full weight of whatever the sea decides to send inland that day.

Why Porthcawl? The Bristol Channel has one of the largest tidal ranges anywhere in the world, and Porthcawl sits right in its path. That means the scene in front of this camera changes enormously through the day, from wide wet sand and a stranded looking breakwater at low water to heavy swell breaking clean over the pier when wind and tide line up.

• The Pier Lighthouse: The squat white and blue lighthouse at the breakwater's end is the landmark everyone photographs, and it anchors nearly every frame of this view.
• Storm Swell: When southwesterly gales meet a big tide, waves burst over the pier wall in the towering plumes Porthcawl is known for.
• Lifeboat Movements: This is a working RNLI station, so you may catch crew activity or a lifeboat heading out through the harbour entrance.

Beyond the Pier: Porthcawl sits on a headland between long sandy beaches and dune systems, with Coney Beach and the seafront promenade close to the harbour. The town is a traditional Welsh seaside resort, popular with surfers, walkers and day trippers from Cardiff and Swansea, and it keeps a busy feel well outside the summer months.
